The Taliban’s supreme leader announced intentions to reinstate the practice of stoning women to death for adultery, along with other harsh punishments. This move reaffirms the Taliban’s commitment to its previous oppressive policies from the 1990s. Since taking control in 2021, the Taliban has resumed public executions and capital punishments. Despite international calls to respect human rights, especially women’s rights, the Taliban remains defiant. The leader stated that such rights contradict their interpretation of Islam and vowed to continue opposing Western democratic values.
