The British Museum has taken legal action against former curator Peter Higgs for allegedly stealing hundreds of artifacts from its collection and selling them online. Higgs, who was fired after more than 1,800 items were found missing, is accused of abusing his position to steal items like ancient gems and gold jewelry. The museum aims to recover the missing items and has already retrieved 356. Higgs denies the claims, citing poor health as his reason for not attending the hearing. The museum’s director resigned over the incident, which has damaged the institution’s reputation.
