A trans woman’s journey home from having gender reassignment surgery in Turkey left her with internal injuries that required emergency treatment at an NHS hospital. Shona, who is married to a woman and has children, traveled from her home in Lancashire to Izmir for the surgery that would give her a vaginal opening. After the operation, she had to travel through three airports and claims no one was there to assist her with her luggage or up and down stairs despite booking assistance beforehand. As a result, she carried her suitcases across the airports while a dilator—a plastic or silicone device used to prevent shrinkage following male-to-female surgery—was inserted inside her. Shona’s journey home led to her suffering from an infection that required debriding, and now she is scheduled to return to Turkey for further surgery to repair the damage caused by walking with the dilator inside her.
