The UK’s House of Lords has voted to reintroduce amendments to the Safety of Rwanda Bill rejected by the House of Commons, dealing a blow to the government’s plans to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda. The government aims to deter migrants from crossing the English Channel by sending asylum seekers to Rwanda for processing. However, critics, including peers in the House of Lords, question Rwanda’s safety for asylum seekers. The legislation must now undergo further debate in the Commons, delaying Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s deportation plans, which are supposed to start before June.
