A United Nations expert, Francesca Albanese, reported to the UN Human Rights Council that there are indications Israel may have committed genocide in its actions in Gaza. She stated that Israel violated three acts in the UN Genocide Convention. Albanese has faced threats due to her findings, which she acknowledged but said it wouldn’t deter her work. Israel rejected the report, accusing Albanese of delegitimizing the state. Albanese highlighted that Israel’s leadership may have endorsed genocidal violence against Palestinians. She called for an end to the “ongoing Nakba,” referencing the 1948 ethnic cleansing of Palestine. Israel’s diplomatic mission labeled the accusation of genocide as outrageous, insisting the conflict targeted Hamas, not civilians.
