UN agencies have released a report warning about the alarming accumulation of electrical and electronic waste globally. In 2022, the planet generated 62 million tons of e-waste, which includes discarded devices like cellphones, electronic cars, TVs, and laptops. Recycling rates are low, with only 22% of e-waste being properly collected and recycled. The report highlights issues such as limited repair options, short product life cycles, and inadequate e-waste management infrastructure. Asia generates half of the world’s e-waste, while recycling rates are highest in Europe. The report suggests that improving e-waste collection and recycling rates could have significant benefits, exceeding costs by over $38 billion by 2030.
