Vaughan Gething has won the Welsh Labour Party leadership contest, making him the first Black leader of Wales’ semi-autonomous government. He narrowly defeated Education Minister Jeremy Miles in the race to replace First Minister Mark Drakeford. Gething won 51.7% of the votes and is expected to be confirmed by the Welsh parliament soon. Gething’s victory marks a historic moment in European politics, with him becoming the first Black national elected leader. He will be taking over a government that has faced challenges such as handling the COVID-19 pandemic and economic issues like Tata Steel’s closures.
