After the recent Israel-Hamas war, the Houthis, a Yemeni rebel group, have been targeting ships in the Red Sea as a protest against Israel’s actions and to assert control in Yemen. Following years of conflict, the Houthis now control a significant portion of Yemen, despite the widespread devastation and humanitarian crisis in the country. Both the Saudi-led coalition and the Houthis have been accused of committing war crimes in Yemen. The attacks in the Red Sea are believed to be part of the Houthis’ efforts to legitimize their leadership in Yemen.
