A UNICEF report shows that child mortality has dropped below 5 million for the first time, with 4.9 million young children dying in 2022. Progress has been made through vaccinations, improved nutrition, and access to antibiotics. However, efforts need to be accelerated as many deaths are preventable. Sub-Saharan Africa and Southern Asia face the highest burden, with stark inequalities within countries. Factors like wealth and education level impact a child’s chance of survival. Community health workers are crucial in providing education and ensuring timely access to services. More focus is needed on reducing newborn deaths, with cost-effective interventions like kangaroo mother care. Continued health investments are necessary to further reduce child mortality, as funding in some countries has declined since the pandemic.
