India’s ruling Hindu party, accused of being hostile to Muslims, is receiving support from some Muslim Shiites. Despite the BJP’s controversial policies, such as fast-tracking citizenship for certain immigrants excluding Muslims, some Shiites credit the party for lifting a ban on a key religious ritual and providing a sense of security for their faith practice. While many Shiites back the BJP in Lucknow, the support is not universal as some still feel the party is against Muslims. The BJP’s outreach to Shiites is seen as a strategic move for political gain, aiming to portray inclusivity and garner support from diverse communities ahead of the elections.
