Israel is determined to launch a ground offensive against Hamas in Rafah, Gaza’s southernmost city, to achieve a “total victory” against the militant group. The operation has raised global alarm due to the high number of civilians in the area. Israel’s allies, including the U.S., are demanding plans to ensure civilian safety. Despite Israel’s military approval for the offensive, concerns persist about the potential displacement and harm to civilians. The U.S. has urged Israel to avoid a ground invasion in Rafah without a credible plan for evacuating civilians. Netanyahu is sending a delegation to Washington to discuss the situation. Israel views Rafah as a critical target to dismantle Hamas’ military capabilities, with the city being the group’s last stronghold in Gaza. However, opposition to Israel’s plan is strong, with concerns about the safety of civilians and diplomatic implications with Egypt. While Israel has stated the need to enter Rafah to achieve victory, no troops have been sent yet, possibly due to ceasefire efforts and logistical challenges. Evacuation plans for civilians have not been finalized.
