A dangerous homemade drug called kush, made with ground-up human bones among other substances, has become a national emergency in Sierra Leone and is spreading to other West African countries. The drug, providing a lengthy and hypnotic high, has led to hundreds of deaths and a drastic increase in hospital admissions due to its devastating effects. President Julius Maada Bio addressed the nation about the drug scourge, prompting increased police presence at cemeteries to prevent the digging up of skeletons for drug production. Young men, particularly under 25, are the most affected demographic, with many suffering from addiction-related issues and some turning to homelessness as a result of their kush use.
